Meteorological Applications

3D s.a. offers tailor made weather information services designed to add economic value as we can support the decision making and planning process of any organization (ranging from individuals, farmers, businesses and public sector agencies such as emergency services) in order to reduce uncertainty, minimize costs and improve their generated revenue.

Our aim is to offer custom made warnings and alerts to those that would be directly affected not only for the areas where extreme weather events (storms & hail storms) are in progress, but most importantly for areas where upcoming extreme weather events will take place in the immediate future.

Our business model enables us to exploit the complete value chain of meteorological information. 3D s.a. owns a weather station network to monitor current weather conditions. 3D s.a. employs professional meteorologists to run in house weather forecasting models. 3D s.a. utilizes the invaluable storm information from our own weather radars.

3D s.a. therefore understand the diversity and technical requirements of the different observations sources, type of data and processing systems and is able to offer tailor-made products and services in order to satisfy the various customer needs.

Weather Radars

The company owns, operates and ingests live real time radar data from 2 C-Band Doppler radars located in Northern Greece. The radars are fully operational throughout the year on a 24 hours basis and are able to detect and analyze heavy rainfall, snow, hail and also track and monitor storms. Their operational spatial coverage is of 200 km each. All data are stored and are used to create live radar images, alert mechanisms and statistical studies.

In case of rainfall, the weather radar can detect the formation of heavy clouds, can identify the existence and the amount of the precipitation in the atmosphere, while is able to detect and identify the type and intensity of the accumulated precipitation (light/heavy rainfall, severe rain/snow/hail). In case of a storm the weather radar can estimate whether it is a hail storm and the size of the hail carried.

The most important attributes of the weather radars is their ability not only to track a storm in real time and monitor its formation, but also their ability to evaluate storm structure, locate atmospheric boundaries and provide a short term forecast of the direction of a storm.

Weather Forecasting Modeling

For the weather forecasting services, 3D s.a. uses the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF). It is a state of the art next-generation mesoscale Numerical Weather Prediction system designed to serve both operational forecasting and atmospheric research needs. It features multiple dynamical cores, a 3-dimensional variational (3DVAR) data assimilation system, and a software architecture allowing for computational parallelism and system extensibility. WRF is suitable for a broad spectrum of applications across scales ranging from meters to thousands of kilometers.

3D s.a. produces a principal 5-day weather forecast for any geographical location in Greece (with fine spatial and temporal resolution) and in Europe. 3D s.a. has the flexibility to tailor made the forecast according to customer needs. Real data from other observation sources (weather stations and radars) enable us to continuously strive to improve our techniques and diversify our bespoke services.

Quality is our number one priority and we constantly monitor and verify our performance to provide you with unrivaled forecast accuracy. To ensure reliability and maintain a standard of more than 97% accuracy 3D s.a. developed automated mechanisms that monitor and review the quality of the forecast on a daily basis.

Automated Weather Stations

3D s.a. owns and operates a weather station network located in Northern Greece with a goal to expand the network to cover most areas across Greece.

3D s.a. employs a pool of highly competent engineers who are certified to compile, install, operate, calibrate and maintain all major types of standard and automated weather stations. 3D s.a. follows the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) international standards for installation, maintenance and sensors’ calibration.

To ensure that all stations are working correctly and at the same time minimize data losses we have designed automated alert mechanisms that enable us to take immediate actions when needed. 3D s.a. holds high volumes of raw data for up to several years which are used for the production of statistics, year on year comparisons with radar data and climate studies.
